Skagway,
Alaska: The prospectors rush off the boat and onto a train of
the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. They dream of riches,
of gold in the Canadain northwest. The powerful Mikado Number
73, whistles
and the train departs. It snakes past spectacular waterfalls,
vertiginous gorges and thick, forested valleys. Even in May,
the snow drifts dwarf the train at the top of the pass. After
crossing the famous White Pass, the train continues into the
inhospitable interior.
